Flyover
I was working in Kosciusko’s Garden recently when a helicopter made repeated flyovers directly above. This image reminded me of another connection to helicopters and Kosciuszko’s Garden. General Ed Rowny, Class of ’41, has been a staunch supporter of maintaining Kosciuszko’s Garden for many years and he and his family have donated funds in an endowment to make sure the Garden is maintained. A plaque in the garden honors General Rowny who served as SALT negotiator under five presidents and is a Distinguished Graduate of West Point. Of direct Polish descent, he attended Johns Hopkins University and Jagiellonian University in Poland before entering West Point. While he was there he attended the 1936 Olympics and witnessed first-hand the emerging power of Hitler. General Rowny was a direct report to Douglas MacArthur in Korea and air dropped in a bridge at the Chosin Resevoir. Rowny was also responsible for introducing armed helicopters into Vietnam. At age 96, former Ambassador Rowny is still involved in numerous political activities that strengthen ties between America and Poland as well as activities that strengthen the Corps of Cadets.
