The first record of this carving on the upper tier of the Garden is apparent in the USMA yearbook of 1869.

The grotto is added sometime during the late 1800’s. Further research is required to more closely identify the date of this addition.

 
 

West Point cadets first paint SARATOGA on the wall to honor Kosciuszko’s contributions in that battle. Later, SARATOGA OCT 1777, is carved into the rockface.
